The species Afifella pfennigii was originally described by Urdiain et al. 2008. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 127 in 2009. Urdiain et al. formed this name in 2008 by placing the species Caumette et al. 2007 into the genus Urdiain et al. 2009.
