The species Rhizobium selenireducens was originally described by Hunter et al. 2007. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 121 in 2008. Upon validation, this name was corrected from (sic) to . Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2021, Rahi et al. established as the basonym of (Hunter et al. 2008) Rahi et al. 2021 .
