The subspecies Francisella noatunensis orientalis was originally described by Ottem et al. 2009. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 128 in 2009. Ramirez-Paredes et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Ottem et al. 2009) Ramirez-Paredes et al. 2020 in 2020.
