The species Vibrio owensii was originally described by Cano-Gómez et al. 2010. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 132 in 2010. Cano-Gomez et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Vibrio communis Chimetto et al. 2011
in 2011.
