Nomenclatural History

The class Archaeobacteria was originally proposed by Murray 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes replaced this name with
Methanobacteria (Murray 1988) Boone 2002
in 2014.
Although this taxon has priority over the later homotypic synonym Methanobacteria, it is not considered to be in current use.
