The class Firmibacteria was originally proposed by Murray 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. replaced this name with Ludwig et al. 2010 in 2015.

Although Firmibacteria is an earlier homotypic synonym of Bacilli, this name is not currently in use.
