The class Scotobacteria was originally proposed by Gibbons and Murray 1978. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980.
The Judicial Commission has asserted that this taxon does not have an identifiable type and is not currently in use as a class name. Gibbons and Murray (1978) applied the name to encompasses the non-photosynthetic Gram-negative prokaryotes.
