Nedashkovskaya et al. formed this name in 2010 by placing the species Flexibacter tractuosus (Lewin 1969) Leadbetter 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Marivirga Nedashkovskaya et al. 2010 emend. Lin et al. 2015.
