The species Borrelia americana was originally described by Rudenko et al. 2009. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 135 in 2010. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established Borrelia americana as the basonym of
Borreliella americana (Rudenko et al. 2010) Adeolu and Gupta 2018
.
