The subclass Oxyphotobacteriae was originally proposed by Gibbons and Murray 1978. Murray elevated this subclass to the rank of class to form the name
Oxyphotobacteria (Gibbons and Murray 1978) Murray 1988
in 1984.
This subclass was not included on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names (1980 nor the Amended Edition).
