The species Rheinheimera aquatica was originally described by Chen et al. 2010. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 139 in 2011. In 2017, Sisinthy et al. established as the basonym of (Chen et al. 2011) Sisinthy et al. 2017 .
