The species Staphylococcus petrasii was originally described by Pantůček et al. 2013. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 152 in 2013. De Bel et al. published an emended description of this species in 2014. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Madhaiyan et al. in 2020. In 2013, Pantůček et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
