The subspecies Staphylococcus petrasii croceilyticus was originally described by Pantůček et al. 2013. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 152 in 2013. Madhaiyan et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Pantůček et al. 2013) Madhaiyan et al. 2020 in 2020.
