The species Tropicibacter mediterraneus was originally described by Lucena et al. 2013. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 155 in 2014. In 2018, Wirth and Whitman established Tropicibacter mediterraneus as the basonym of
Ruegeria mediterranea (Lucena et al. 2014) Wirth and Whitman 2018
. In 2021, Liang et al. established Tropicibacter mediterraneus as the basonym of
Falsiruegeria mediterranea (Lucena et al. 2014) Liang et al. 2021
.
