The species Desulfotomaculum tongense was originally described by Cha et al. 2013. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 156 in 2014. In 2018, Watanabe et al. established Desulfotomaculum tongense as the basonym of
Desulfohalotomaculum tongense (Cha et al. 2014) Watanabe et al. 2018
.
