Nomenclatural History
The genus Oceanococcus was originally proposed by Li et al. 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 157 in 2014. Li et al. established as a later homotypic synonym of Li et al. 2013 in 2014.

The name Maricoccus Li et al. 2013 is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of the isopod genus name Maricoccus Poore, 1994. The name Oceanococcus Li et al. 2014 replaces Maricoccus.
