The species Chryseobacterium zeae was originally described by Kämpfer et al. 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 157 in 2014. García-López et al. published an emended description of this species in 2019. In 2020, Nicholson et al. established Chryseobacterium zeae as the basonym of
Epilithonimonas zeae (Kämpfer et al. 2014) Nicholson et al. 2020
