The species Gimesia maris was originally described by Scheuner et al. 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 162 in 2015. Scheuner et al. formed this name in 2014 by placing the species
Planctomyces maris (ex Bauld and Staley 1976) Bauld and Staley 1980
into the genus Gimesia Scheuner et al. 2015 emend. Kumar et al. 2020.
