The species Pseudorhizobium pelagicum was originally described by Kimes et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 177 in 2017. In 2020, Hördt et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Kimes et al. 2017) Hördt et al. 2020 .
