The species Porphyrobacter mercurialis was originally described by Coil et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 168 in 2016. In 2019, Liu et al. established Porphyrobacter mercurialis as the basonym of
Croceibacterium mercuriale (Coil et al. 2016) Liu et al. 2019
