The species Thalassobius abyssi was originally described and validly published by Nogi et al. 2016. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2018, Wirth and Whitman established Thalassobius abyssi as the basonym of
Shimia abyssi (Nogi et al. 2016) Wirth and Whitman 2018 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
