Shivani et al. formed this name in 2017 by placing the subspecies Desulfovibrio oceani oceani Finster and Kjeldsen 2012 into the species Halodesulfovibrio oceani (Finster and Kjeldsen 2012) Shivani et al. 2017. In 2017, Shivani et al. reduced Halodesulfovibrio oceani (Finster and Kjeldsen 2012) Shivani et al. 2017 to the rank of subspecies.
