Nomenclatural History
The species Neisseria catarrhalis was originally described by Holland 1920. In 1970, Catlin established as the basonym of (Frosch and Kolle 1896) Catlin 1970 (Approved Lists 1980) pro synon. Moraxella catarrhalis (Frosch and Kolle 1896) Henriksen and Bøvre 1968 (Approved Lists 1980) .

According to Catlin 1970, the description of Mikrokokkus catarrhalis given by Frosch and Kolle in 1896 is consistent with that of Branhamella catarrhalis.
