The family Lewinellaceae was originally proposed by Hahnke et al. 2016. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 175 in 2017. García-López et al. published an emended description of this family in 2019. García-López et al. transferred the members of Hahnke et al. 2017 into this family in 2019.
