The species Rhizobium viscosum was originally described and validly published by Flores-Félix et al. 2017. Flores-Félix et al. formed this name in 2017 by placing the species Gasdorf et al. 1965 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Frank 1889 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Young et al. 2001.
