Nomenclatural History
The phylum Thermodesulfobacteriota was originally proposed by Garrity and Holt 2001. This name was validly published by Oren and Garrity 2021. Whitman et al. corrected this name from (sic) to . established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Waite et al. 2020 in 2015.

Waite et al. 2020 move the class Thermodesulfobacteria into the novel phylum Desulfobacterota. This results in conflicting opinions on the taxonomy of this phylum.
