The species Photorhabdus australis was originally described and validly published by Machado et al. 2018. Machado et al. published an emended description of this species in 2021. Machado et al. elevated the subspecies Akhurst et al. 2004 to the rank of species to form this name in 2018. In 2021, Machado et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Akhurst et al. 2004) Machado et al. 2021 .
