The species Lactobacillus caucasicus was originally described by Beijerinck 1901. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum rejicienda by Judicial Opinion 38 in 1971.

The name Lactobacillus caucasicus Beijerinck 1901 was placed in the list of rejected names by Judicial Opinion 38, and L. caucasicus ceased to be the type species of Lactobacillus Beijerinck.
