The species Bacillus whitmori was originally described by Bergey et al. 1930. Parker et al. established as a later homotypic synonym of Whitmore 1913 in 2019.

This name is illegitimate as Whitmore had named the organism Bacillus pseudomallei prior the publication of this name by Bergey et al. in 1930.
