Nomenclatural History
The genus Aerobacter was originally proposed by Beijerinck 1900. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum rejicienda by Judicial Opinion 46 in 1971. Hormaeche and Edwards published an emended description of this genus in 1958.

Carpenter et al. (2) requested an Opinion which would reject the generic names Aerobacter Beijerinck 1900 (1) and Aerobacter Hormaeche and Edwards 1958 (4). The Judicial Commission (3) approved the following Opinion, which rejects the generic name Aerobacter Beijerinck, but noted that Hormaeche and Edwards (4) did not propose Aerobacter as a new generic name: they merely redefined Aerobacter Beijerinck. Consequently, there is no such name as Aerobacter Hormaeche and Edwards and no action need be taken on the request to reject the name.
