Nomenclatural History
The species Acetobacter ascendens was originally described by Kim et al. 2019. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 193 in 2020. Kim et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of (Frateur 1950) De Ley and Frateur 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Hördt et al. 2020 in 2018. Kim et al. elevated the subspecies (Henneberg 1898) De Ley and Frateur 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Hördt et al. 2020 to the rank of species to form this name in 2018.

Because 'Acetobacter ascendens' is an elevation in rank, it was ‘sp. nov.’ and not 'comb. nov.' and there is no basonym. Therefore, the words 'comb. nov.' after 'Acetobacter ascendens sp.nov.' or 'A. ascendens sp. nov.' in the title, abstract, main text, tables and protologues were deleted. In addition, 'Acetobacterascendens (Henneberg 1898) basonym, Acetobacter pasteurianussubsp. ascendens (Henneberg 1898) and Acetobacter pasteurianussubsp. paradoxus (Frateur 1950).' in the protologue of Acetobacterascendens was corrected to 'Elevation in rank from Acetobacterpasteurianus subsp. ascendens Henneberg 1898 (Approved Lists 1980).' Hördt et al. 2020 independently asserted this rank elevation.
