The species Mycoplasmopsis testudinea was originally described by Gupta et al. 2018. Gupta et al. formed this name in 2018 by placing the species Brown et al. 2004 into the genus Gupta et al. 2018.

Gupta et el. 2018 incorrectly cites the spelling of the basonym epithet as "testudieum".
