The species Mesoplasma melaleucae was originally described by Gupta et al. 2019. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 188 in 2019. Gupta et al. formed this name in 2019 by placing the species (Tully et al. 1990) Tully et al. 1993 into the genus Tully et al. 1993 emend. Gupta et al. 2019.
