The species Neptunochlamydia vexilliferae was originally described by Pizzetti et al. 2016. Oren et al. corrected this name from Candidatus (sic) to Candidatus .

Pizzetti et al. 2016 provided a protologue for the species but not the genus. No etymology was provided.
