The species Marinobacter nauticus was originally described by Tindall 2020. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 194 in 2020. Tindall formed this name in 2020 by placing the species Baumann et al. 1972 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Gauthier et al. 1992. Tindall established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Gauthier et al. 1992 in 2020. Tindall established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Nguyen et al. 1999 in 2020.
