The species Desulforamulus varus was originally described by Watanabe et al. 2015. This name was validly published by Oren and Garrity 2021. Watanabe et al. formed this name in 2020 by placing the species Ogg and Patel 2011 into the genus Watanabe et al. 2021.

Watanabe et al. 2020 erroneously cited the basonym epithet as "varus" instead of "varum".
