Nomenclatural History
The species Desulfotruncus alcoholivorax was originally described by Watanabe et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 197 in 2021. Watanabe et al. formed this name in 2020 by placing the species (Kaksonen et al. 2008) Watanabe et al. 2018 into the genus Watanabe et al. 2021.

Watanabe et al. 2020 state, "Desulfotruncus alcoholivorax comb. nov. (basonyms: Desulfotomaculum alcoholivorax Kaksonen et al. 2008, Desulfallas sapomandens Watanabe et al. 2018)". The latter name is a heterotypic synonym, not a basonym. Furthermore, the basonym of Desulfallas sapomandens (Cord-Ruwisch and Garcia 1990) Watanabe et al. 2018 is Desulfotomaculum sapomandens Cord-Ruwisch and Garcia 1990.
