The species Thermotoga elfii was originally described and validly published by Ravot et al. 1995. In 2014, Bhandari and Gupta established Thermotoga elfii as the basonym of
Pseudothermotoga elfii (Ravot et al. 1995) Bhandari and Gupta 2014 emend. Belahbib et al. 2018
.
