The subspecies Streptosporangium viridogriseum kofuense was originally described by Nonomura and Ohara 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Stackebrandt et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Nonomura and Ohara 1969) Stackebrandt et al. 1994 in 1994.
