Nomenclatural History
The genus Treponema was originally proposed by Schaudinn 1905. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Smibert published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Abt et al. in 2013.
