The family Bacteroidaceae was originally proposed by Pribram 1933. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. García-López et al. published an emended description of this family in 2019. García-López et al. transferred the members of Garrity et al. 2007 into this family in 2019.
