The species Bacteroides gingivalis was originally described and validly published by Coykendall et al. 1980. In 1988, Shah and Collins established Bacteroides gingivalis as the basonym of
Porphyromonas gingivalis (Coykendall et al. 1980) Shah and Collins 1988 emend. Hahnke et al. 2016
