The species Sphingobacterium piscium was originally described by Takeuchi and Yokota 1992. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 47 in 1993. In 1998, Steyn et al. established Sphingobacterium piscium as the basonym of
Pedobacter piscium (Takeuchi and Yokota 1993) Steyn et al. 1998 emend. Farfán et al. 2014
