The family Flexibacteraceae was originally proposed by García-López et al. 2019. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 193 in 2020. Garrity and Holt transferred the members of this family into Larkin and Borrall 1978 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. García-López et al. 2019 in 2001. Krieg et al. transferred the members of this family into Stanier 1940 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. García-López et al. 2019 in 2010.
