The species Fusobacterium varium was originally described by Moore and Holdeman 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Bailey and Love established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Fusobacterium pseudonecrophorum (ex Harris and Brown 1927) Shinjo et al. 1990
in 1993.
