The genus Algibacter was originally proposed and validly published by Nedashkovskaya et al. 2004. Nedashkovskaya et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2007. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Park et al. in 2013 and Shakeela et al. in 2015. Park et al. transferred the members of Yi et al. 2011 emend. Park et al. 2013 into this genus in 2013. Park et al. transferred the members of Park et al. 2013 into this genus in 2013.
