The genus Maribacter was originally proposed and validly published by Nedashkovskaya et al. 2004. Barbeyron et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2008. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Nedashkovskaya et al. in 2010, Weerawongwiwat et al. in 2013, Lo et al. in 2013, Hu et al. in 2015 and Jackson et al. in 2015.
