The species Mycobacterium cosmeticum was originally described and validly published by Cooksey et al. 2004. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 2018, Gupta et al. established as the basonym of (Cooksey et al. 2004) Gupta et al. 2018 .
