The subspecies Photorhabdus asymbiotica australis was originally described and validly published by Akhurst et al. 2004. Machado et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Akhurst et al. 2004) Machado et al. 2018 emend. Machado et al. 2021 in 2018.
