The genus Branhamella was originally proposed by Catlin 1970. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Reyn published an emended description of this genus in 1974. Bøvre transferred the members of this genus into
Moraxella (Branhamella) Bøvre 1979
in 1979.
